Movie Quote of the Day:
“I love rumors! Facts can be so misleading, where rumors, true or false, are often revealing.”
– Col. Hans Landa, Inglourious Basterds (2009)
Here are the matchups for week 14:
Week 13 record: 11-5 (68.8 percent)
All-time record: 111-81 (57.8 percent)
Minnesota (8-4) vs. Arizona (10-3)
U of Phoenix Stadium
Line: ARI -10.5
After getting destroyed by Seattle last week at home I think it’s time to officially say that Minnesota is overrated. The Vikings have beat one team with a winning record all season, and that win came against a struggling Kansas City team at the time. Arizona has won six games in a row. Personally, I think the Cardinals are the best team in the NFC. Arizona is well coached, Carson Palmer is a reliable quarterback, and that defense is really good. I can’t see Minnesota winning this game. I like the Cardinals.
Prediction: Cardinals 27, Vikings 14
Buffalo (6-6) vs. Philadelphia (5-7)
Lincoln Financial Field
I expect Philadelphia to be riding high after knocking off New England last week. With Washington’s loss on Monday night, the Eagles moved into a three-way tie in the NFC East. I expect Chip Kelly to have them motivated for this game. I know Philadelphia has had its struggles, but it seems that Kelly has never lost the locker room this season. I don’t think Buffalo is a better team than Philadelphia despite what the records say. I’m going with the Eagles.
Prediction: Eagles 28, Bills 21
San Francisco (4-8) vs. Cleveland (2-10)
San Francisco showed me a lot by going into Chicago last week and knocking off the Bears. I didn’t give them much credit before that game, but I am now. Blaine Gabbert hasn’t been terrible ever since taking over for Colin Kaepernick. Cleveland is the worst team in the NFL. The Browns have named Johnny Manziel the starter for the game. I’ve never been a believer in Manziel, and I don’t think he’s good enough to win this game for Cleveland. I think the 49ers get another win.
Prediction: 49ers 24, Browns 19
Detroit (4-8) vs. St. Louis (4-8)
Edward Jones Dome
St. Louis, Mo.
Line: DET -1
Detroit suffered a heart-wrenching loss last week to Green Bay (As a Packers fan, I’m pretty happy about it). St. Louis has dropped five games in a row after a 4-3 start. The Rams haven’t been able to get Todd Gurley going at running back, and the quarterback play has been terrible. The Rams just aren’t a good team right now. Detroit has been playing better. I think the Lions will be angry after last week’s defeat and they’ll win this game.
Prediction: Lions 24, Rams 21
New Orleans (4-8) vs. Tampa Bay (6-6)
Raymond James Stadium
Line: TB -3.5
New Orleans came close to handing Carolina its first loss of the season last week. Tampa Bay has won its last four out of six games. The Buccaneers are playing well mostly because of Jameis Winston. I know the Saints almost had a big upset last week, but anyone can get up to play an undefeated team at home. I expect a hangover from New Orleans for this game. I think Tampa Bay wins.
Prediction: Buccaneers 31, Saints 24
Tennessee (3-9) vs. New York Jets (7-5)
East Rutherford, N.J.
Line: NYJ -7.5
Tennessee had a wild victory at home against Jacksonville. Marcus Mariota has had a solid rookie season so far, and he’s a better quarterback than any on the Jets’ roster. However, the Jets have quietly won two games in a row after dropping four out of five games before this win streak. The Jets have a better roster and better coach than Tennessee and that’s why I think the Jets win this game, but I think Mariota keeps it close.
Prediction: Jets 26, Titans 21
Indianapolis (6-6) vs. Jacksonville (4-8)
Line: IND -1.5
It looks like the Colts will be without Andrew Luck for this game. I’m starting to give this Jacksonville team some respect. The Jaguars have been in every game since the New England game in week three. Blake Bortles has had a pretty good season (3,274 passing yards, 27 TD, 86.8 rating). Matt Hasselbeck has been a nice story this season for Indianapolis, but I think his story is about up. I like Jacksonville to win.
Prediction: Jaguars 31, Colts 27
San Diego (3-9) vs. Kansas City (7-5)
Kansas City, Mo.
Line: KC -11.5
San Diego is one of the worst teams in the league. The Chargers need to be expecting an early draft pick come April. Kansas City has probably been the hottest team in the NFL, winning six games in a row. Arrowhead Stadium is probably the toughest place to play for any NFL team. I don’t think San Diego has much of a chance to win this game. I think Kansas City keeps its win streak going.
Prediction: Chiefs 31, Chargers 20
Washington (5-7) vs. Chicago (5-7)
Line: CHI -3
Washington suffered a bad loss to Dallas last week (mainly due to DeSean Jackson’s ignorance). Chicago lost last week, but this team has been playing better in recent weeks. I think the Bears have the advantage in this game. They have the better coach, quarterback, and they have home-field advantage. I think the Redskins keep the game close, but I think Chicago wins.
Prediction: Bears 28, Redskins 24
Atlanta (6-6) vs. Carolina (12-0)
Bank of America Stadium
Line: CAR -8.5
Atlanta has been awful after starting the season 5-0. The Falcons have lost five games in a row and Matt Ryan has been a turnover machine. Carolina remained unbeaten after defeating New Orleans last week on the road. Cam Newton looks more and more like the MVP frontrunner. The Panthers are the better team, I can’t pick against them.
Prediction: Panthers 34, Falcons 21
Seattle (7-5) vs. Baltimore (4-8)
M&T Bank Stadium
Line: SEA -3.5
Seattle has been hot recently, winning three straight games. If Joe Flacco was healthy for Baltimore, I could see Baltimore knocking off Seattle. However, the Ravens will have to rely Matt Schaub to win this game. I don’t think Schaub can outplay Russell Wilson, who has been playing at a very high level. I have to take the Seahawks.
Prediction: Seahawks 30, Ravens 19
Oakland (5-7) vs. Denver (10-2)
Sports Authority Field
Line: DEN -8.5
Oakland has hit a skid recently. The Raiders have now lost four out of their last five games, after getting off to a 4-3 start. Denver has played very well ever since Brock Osweiler took over at quarterback for Peyton Manning. The Broncos have won three straight games under Osweiler, and have looked like a completely different team than when Peyton Manning was the quarterback. I think Denver keeps it going with Osweiler.
Prediction: Broncos 27, Raiders 17
Dallas (4-8) vs. Green Bay (8-4)
Green Bay, Wisc.
Line: GB -7.5
How will Green Bay respond after that miraculous win in Detroit? Will that win be the kick in the pants that this team needed? Or will the Packers continue their struggles? This won’t be an easy game. I’m sure Dallas has had this game circled ever since the playoff game last year. The Cowboys have nothing to lose, and I think they have a few tricks up their sleeve. I think Green Bay wins, but I think Dallas keeps it close.
Prediction: Packers 23, Cowboys 20
New England (10-2) vs. Houston (6-6)
Line: NE -3
I know New England has had its struggles recently, and it looks like New England will be without Rob Gronkowski for this game. Tom Brady has no one to throw to. His offensive line isn’t great either, and the Patriots are about to face a great Houston defensive front. Every factor is going against the Patriots, but I think they find a way to get it done. I can’t see T.J. Yates outplaying Tom Brady.
Prediction: Patriots 19, Texans 17
New York Giants (5-7) vs. Miami (5-7)
Sun Life Stadium
The Giants have fallen apart, losing five of their last seven games. They can’t win the close games. Miami isn’t a great team by any means. The Dolphins have had their struggles (too many egos). I just can’t trust the Giants to win games anymore. I’m going with the Dolphins.
Prediction: Dolphins 24, Giants 20
Game of the Week:
Pittsburgh (7-5) vs. Cincinnati (10-2)
Paul Brown Stadium
Line: CIN -2.5
Pittsburgh has one of the best offenses in the league. I’d love to see where the Steelers would be if they didn’t have so many injuries this season. The Bengals got away with a win when these teams met in Heinz Field earlier this season. I think Pittsburgh will come out ready to play since they have a playoff spot on the line and find a way to get a win.
Prediction: Steelers 30, Bengals 24
