MLB Playoffs Predictions

Movie Quote of the Day:

“I might act tough, but I got a lot of feelings. And you hurt damn near every one of them.”

– Matheson, Pineapple Express (2008)

MLB

I’m going to come right out and say that I don’t know squat about baseball. I’ve rarely watched any games this season. I’m going to try to give my predictions for the postseason, but take it all with a grain of salt.

AL Division Champions/Wild Card Teams:

East: Toronto Blue Jays (93-69)
Central: Kansas City Royals (95-67)
West: Texas Rangers (88-74)
WC: New York Yankees (87-75)
WC: Houston Astros (86-76)

NL Division Champions/Wild Card Teams:

East: New York Mets (90-72)
Central: St. Louis Cardinals (100-62)
West: Los Angeles Dodgers (92-70)
WC: Pittsburgh Pirates (98-64)
WC: Chicago Cubs (97-65)

Wild Card Games:

Houston pitcher Dallas Keuchel.
Houston pitcher Dallas Keuchel.

Houston vs. New York Yankees
Yankee Stadium
New York, N.Y.
(HOU) Dallas Keuchel – 2.48 ERA vs. (NYY) Masahiro Tanaka – 3.51 ERA

Both of these teams are ranked in the top five in the American League in batting. The Yankees have a team batting average of .250, the Astros are slightly below that at .249. The Yankees have averaged 4.7 runs per game this season. The Astros averaged less than that at 4.5 runs per game. Keuchel has a good chance of winning the American League Cy Young. When it’s playoff time, it’s all about pitching. The Astros have the better pitching.

Prediction: Astros 4, Yankees 2

Pittsburgh outfielder Andrew McCutchen.
Pittsburgh outfielder Andrew McCutchen.

Chicago Cubs vs. Pittsburgh Pirates
PNC Ballpark
Pittsburgh, Pa.
(CHC) Jake Arrieta – 1.77 ERA vs. (PIT) Gerrit Cole – 2.60 ERA

Pittsburgh ranks in the top five in batting in the National League. The entire Pirates have an average batting average of .259. The Pirates also averaged 4.3 runs per game. The Cubs rank No. 6 in batting, having a .244 batting average. The Cubs also average 4.25 runs per game. Jake Arrieta has been pitching lights out ever since the All-Star Break. I have to pick the team with the guy who has had the hot hand for months.

Prediction: Cubs 3, Pirates 2

AL Division Round (Best of 5 series):

Toronto pitcher David Price.
Toronto pitcher David Price.

Houston vs. Kansas City

Houston leads the American League in pitching with an ERA of 3.57. The defending AL champions, Royals, ranks sixth in batting and third in pitching. The Royals are the better team and I expect them to win.

Prediction: Royals in 4

Texas first baseman Prince Fielder.

Texas vs. Toronto

The Rangers have been one of the best stories in baseball. They lost pitcher Yu Darvish for the year earlier this season. They’ve been a different team ever since trading for pitcher Cole Hamels. Texas’ batting ranks third in the AL. However, the Blue Jays aren’t far behind, ranking fifth with a 3.80 ERA. I know that Houston has the best pitching in the AL, but I expect Toronto’s offense to prevail. I don’t think Houston will be able to keep up with Toronto’s scoring.

Prediction: Blue Jays in 4

NL Division Round (Best of 5 series):

St. Louis outfielder Matt Holliday.
St. Louis outfielder Matt Holliday.

Chicago vs. St. Louis

Chicago has been hot ever since the All-Star Break. The Cardinals have been hot almost the entire season, except maybe the last month or so. This matchup has been almost even the entire season, the Cardinals have the slight edge winning 10 games compared to the Cubs’ nine. The Cardinals pitching has been solid all season. I expect them to keep winning.

Prediction: Cardinals in 5

New York pitcher Jacob deGrom.

New York Mets vs. Los Angeles

The Mets have been another fascinating story in baseball. This team has been hot since acquiring outfielder Yoenis Cespedes. The Dodgers has been riding the coat tails of their great pitchers Clayton Kershaw and Zack Greinke. The Mets haven’t been healthy the last few weeks. If the Mets had home field advantage in this series I think it would be different. However, I think the veteran hitters for Dodgers will be too much for the Mets’ young pitching.

Prediction: Dodgers in 5

ALCS (Best of 7 series):

Kansas City outfielder Lorenzo Cain.
Kansas City outfielder Lorenzo Cain.

Toronto vs. Kansas City

I don’t know if the Blue Jays’ offense will be enough for them to win in this postseason. I think eventually their offense will be contained. I like the Royals to get it done in this series. I like their pitching, particularly in the bullpen. Plus, they can hit the ball.

Prediction: Royals in 6

NLCS (Best of 7 series):

Los Angeles pitcher Clayton Kershaw.
Los Angeles pitcher Clayton Kershaw.

Los Angeles vs. St. Louis

The Dodgers have the talent to win the World Series every season. However, they always seem to have some excuse to not get it done. I think Mike Methany is a better manager than Don Mattingly. I like the Cardinals to get to another World Series.

Prediction: Cardinals in 6

World Series (Best of 7 series):

Kansas City first baseman Eric Hosmer.
Kansas City first baseman Eric Hosmer.

St. Louis vs. Kansas City

Despite the Cardinals winning 100 games, the Royals will get home field advantage in this series thanks to the AL winning the All-Star Game. The Cardinals are somewhat similar to the Dodgers when it comes playoff time. Ever since winning the 2011 World Series, they have had some excuse to never win another title. I think the Royals have been playing angry this season ever since losing the World Series last year in heartbreaking fashion. I really like the Royals’ roster. I think they get it done.

Prediction: Royals in 6
